Machu Picchu and The Sacred Valley in Pictures

March 26, 2008 - Aguas Calientes (near Machu Picchu)
Kim climbing up the ladders on the way to the top of Putucusi Mountain. The trail was like a "jungle gym for adults"!

The view of Machu Picchu from the top of Putucusi Mountain.

March 27, 2008 - Machu Picchu

The view of the ruins of Machu Picchu from Huayna Picchu as the clouds are lifting.
The view improving.

The clouds disappear!

There it is! (Huayna Picchu is in between our heads)

The postcard shot.

An artsy shot, using the sweet Incan stonework.

March 29, 2008 - The Sacred Valley near Cuzco

The Incan ruins at Moray. These are concentric circles that they terraced for agricultural purposes.

Another view at Moray.

Yet another Incan relic: The Salineras. They routed salt-laden water from a hot spring through this system to harvest the salt.

The Salineras with an USAid garbage can!

Great pictures, and a trip down memory lane for Gloria and me. We climbed Wayna Picchu. I don't remember Piticusu Mountain. The clouds rolling through were just the same. Have you gone down the slides at Sacsayhuaman yet? Thanks for the update and take care. John B. (Dad to Kimberly)

Kimber and Brian,
What a treat. I opened the blog to one of my favorite sights, Machu Picchu. What an adventure you two are having. I can't wait for the commentary. Kimberly, it looks like you handled the climb better than your old Mom.

I have always wanted to go to Machu Picchu but with my mobility problems I won't be able to until they put in an escalator! How I envy you both! (I said "I" because high places are not a favorite of Arn's!)Your pictures are great and Kim you must be quite a woman to climb that ladder.

Kimberly: It has been driving me nuts all day--"Huayna Picchu". You know who!

I made some edits so you won't go crazy. But it was spelled "Wayna" on most of the signs in the ruins. I think it may be a difference of Spanish vs. Quechua. (i.e. "Huaraz" is Spanish, but in Quechua they spell it "Waras".)

You guys are such ridiculous hikers! Kim - you're looking buff :)

Brian: My Quechua is a little weak. I'm sure Kimberly has warned you of my spelling obsession. Disregard it for all purposes in the future. We get too much enjoyment out of your updates. John

Kim & Bri,
I have thoroughly enjoyed your photos and commentary on your hiking adventures, no matter how you spell them! That just cracks me up, I knew who anonymous was! (and we love him).

Your photos and diary have me browsing the pages of Budget Travel searching for an adventure to call my own. I think I can convince Jode to risk the "tummy bugs". The photos of you guys at Machu Picchu reminded me John & Gloria's stories of their trip so many years ago. I'm not 100% sure but I think I could climb that ladder so long as I took my time. Perhaps I'd need a tent for an overnight stay by the time I reached the top!
Kim, received your email, thanks and so nice to hear from you. I think about you guys every day and live your adventure vicariously. Keep on rolling with the changes and enjoying the coffee. Love Brenda who loves you like a Mom!
Gloria....let's go!
